Located in the county town Castlebar, lough lannagh is a scenic lake with a walking loop around it. there is spots for fishing, playground, skate park and dog park. Its located beside lough lannagh leisure park, swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam room facilities.

It also connects up to the Turlough castlebar greenway cycle/walking route.

The Great Western Greenway

The Michael Davitt Museum

Located in the Village of Straide, it is dedicated to the life and legacy of Michael Davitt (1846–1906), the "Father of the Land League" and a renowned social justice activist. The museum is uniquely housed in the restored pre-Penal church where Davitt was baptised, situated adjacent to the 13th-century Straide Abbey (Friary) where he is buried.

Ballina Whiskey Distillery 

The primary whiskey distillery in Ballina is Ballina Whiskey (formerly known as the Connacht Distillery). Located on the banks of the River Moy, it was the first distillery built in County Mayo in over 150 years when it opened in 2015.

The distillery operates a visitor centre and offers guided "grain-to-glass" tours that explain the production process, including their extended seven-day fermentation and small-batch distillation

Downpatrick Head

Sitting out in the wild Atlantic Ocean, Downpatrick Head is an area of unrivaled coastal beauty and historical importance. Just a few miles north of Ballycastle village, County Mayo, is the the windswept outcrop of Downpatrick Head

  • Dún Briste Sea Stack: This iconic 50m-high flat-topped sea stack stands about 80m off the mainland. Its name means "Broken Fort," and it contains vertical layers of sandstone, limestone, and shale dating back 350 million years. It was separated from the coast during a violent storm in 1393.
  • Poll na Seantainne: A massive inland blowhole connected to the sea via a tunnel. During storms, waves surge through it, sending foam high into the air.
  • St. Patrick’s Legacy: The headland is named after Ireland's patron saint, who founded a church here. Today, you can see the ruins of a later church, a stone cross, and a holy well.
  • ÉIRE 64 Sign: A restored World War II neutrality  visible from the air, constructed of white stones to notify aircraft they were over neutral Ireland

Ballycroy National Park

Ballycroy National Park is Ireland’s sixth National Park and located on the Western seaboard in northwest Mayo. It comprises of 11,000 hectares of Atlantic blanket bog and mountainous terrain, covering a vast uninhabited and unspoiled wilderness dominated by the Nephin Beg mountain range.

To the west of the mountains is the Owenduff bog. This is one of the last intact active blanket bog systems in Ireland and Western Europe and is an important scientific and scenic feature of the National Park. Ballycroy National Park is part of the Natura 2000 Network, which protects rare and important habitats and species under the EU Habitats and Birds Directive.

Blacksod Lighthouse

(Teach Solais an Fhóid Duibh) is a historic operational lighthouse situated at the southern tip of the Mullet Peninsula. Built in 1864, it is famous for its unique square granite construction and its pivotal role in deciding the timing of the D-Day landings during World War II.

Keem Bay, Achill

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, it is a signature discovery point on the Wild Atlantic Way

The Achill Experience Aquarium & Visitor Centre is Mayo's only aquarium and serves as an all-weather hub for exploring the history, culture, and marine life of Achill Island.

Rockfleet Castle

Rockfleet Castle (Irish: Carraig an Chabhlaigh), also known as Carrickahowley Castle, is a 16th-century tower house located on the northern shores of Clew Bay near Newport. Standing 18 metres tall, it is most famous as the principal residence and likely place of death of the legendary "Pirate Queen," Grace O'Malley (Granuaile)

  • Current Status: The interior is currently closed to the public for extensive conservation work by the Office of Public Works (OPW).
  • Expected Reopening: It is projected to reopen to visitors in June 2026.

The Céide fields 

(Achaidh Chéide, meaning "flat topped hill fields") is the oldest known stone-walled field system in the world. Dating back nearly 6,000 years, this Neolithic site predates the Egyptian pyramids by over two millennia.

Moore Hall

Moore Hall is a historic 18th-century estate and ruined manor house located near Carnacon, County Mayo, overlooking the shores of Lough Carra. Managed by Coillte, the site is a popular public amenity featuring forest walks, nature trails, and significant cultural history.

Ballintubber Abbey

Ballintubber Abbey is an 800-year-old active abbey founded by a king, notable for over eight centuries of continuous worship and its connections to Saint Patrick and the ancient pilgrimage route to Croagh Patrick. It is often referred to as "the Abbey that refused to die" due to its resilience through centuries of turmoil, including being burned by Cromwellian forces.

Visiting Information

  • Location: The Abbey is in Ballintubber, County Mayo, off the main N84 road, about a 10-minute drive from Castlebar.
  • Opening Hours: The Abbey grounds are open daily from 9am to 9pm. The visitor centre and gift shop hours are Monday-Saturday from 9:30am to 4:30pm and Sunday from 11:45am to 3pm.
  • Guided Tours: Expert-guided tours are available, which bring the history to life with stories of Cromwellian burnings, the notorious priest hunter Seán na Sagart, and links to pirate queen Grace O'Malley's son, Tiobóid na Long, who is buried there.

Tourmakeady waterfall

The tourmakeady waterfall (also known as Tourmakeady Falls) is a scenic "hidden gem" located within the ancient Tourmakeady Woods in County Mayo. Situated between the Partry Mountains and Lough Mask, the waterfall is the centerpiece of a family-friendly forest park maintained by Coillte.

Walking Trail Options Visitors can choose between two primary well-signposted routes to reach the falls:

  • The Short Walk (From Forest Car Park): An easy 2.1km - 2.2km loop that takes approximately 30–45 minutes. The path is relatively flat, well-maintained, and suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.
  • The Long Walk (From Village Centre): A 4km loop starting from the Tourmakeady Community Centre. This route follows purple arrows along the main road before entering the woods and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Also located nearby is Loch Measc Distillery  (Lough Mask Distillery) a small-batch, craft distillery producing Irish whiskey, gin, and vodka on the shores of Lough Mask.

Visiting & ToursThe distillery offers an immersive, personal experience where visitors can see the entire production process from malting to bottling.

  • Operating Hours: Monday to Friday, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Closed Saturday and Sunday).
